In Stuttgart, the main electricity and gas supplier is ENBW – Energie Baden Württemberg, but you can always choose another supplier. The prices for electricity and gas differ a lot. If your flat is part of a building cooperative, it may exist a special, cheaper tariff for tenants of these flats. You should bear several things in mind before choosing an electricity supplier:
- contract period
- notice period, if possible 1 month
- no tariffs with deposit
- do not pay the annual power consumption beforehand all at once
- monthly payment
- price guarantee for one year in the contract
Every electricity supplier has its own website, where you can register. There you need to indicate the address of your new flat, the meter number and the meter reading (which you noted at the handover of the flat) as well as your bank details. The electricity supplier debits the monthly costs for power consumption per direct debit. Because of the introduction of SEPA some electricity suppliers accept European bank accounts.
If your flat is heated with gas or if you have a gas cooker in the kitchen, as tenant you´ll have to order gas from a gas supplier and you have to register there. In Stuttgart several different gas supplier exist offering different tariffs and conditions. You should keep the several things in mind before registering at one of those.
- contract period as short as possible
- monthly part payments
- short cancellation period (one month)
Often the registration could be done online. Most of the gas suppliers provide the necessary forms online and you can send those online. You have to indicate the meter reading, your name, address and bank details.
